ROUTINE SERVICES

Annual Wellness Examinations

Your pets will benefit from routine visits to the veterinarian.
Regularly scheduled exams help identify and address medical,
behavioral, and environmental issues before they become a problem.
They also allow us time to discuss the latest advances in veterinary
health care and nutrition that may prove beneficial.

New Puppy and Kitten Exams

Bringing a new puppy or kitten into your life is a big step that can be
both joyful and stressful. Our aim during the initial exam is to
educate and support new pet owners. First , a technician will weigh
and take the temperature of your kitten or puppy and answer general
questions and offer resources. The doctor will then examine your pet
and help map out your puppy or kitten's vaccine and deworming
schedule. All your questions will be answered as well.

Senior Pet Care

As pets age, their exams become increasingly important. When
diagnosed early, many diseases related to aging can be treated
effectively. We recommend senior exams every 6 months beginning in
middle age so that we can track any disease processes and devise
proper interventions as soon as possible.

Vaccinations

We employ a conservative approach to vaccinations and believe that
all vaccines should be tailored to the pet's specific, individual
requirements. We follow the AAHA vaccine guidelines that have
shown that, in most cases, vaccines do not need to be given every year.
We prefer to give one vaccine at a time to minimize an adverse
reaction in a dog or cat.
For owners who prefer to skip vaccinations altogether, we offer blood
titers that test a pet's immunity level to determine whether or not
further protection is necessary. Our Vaccines are thimerasol Free.

Acupuncture

is the stimulation of special points on the body that result in bringing
the body back into balance and help in healing. These special points called "acupoints" are located in areas where there are mast cells and nerve endings.
When acupuncture needles are inserted, there is a release of chemicals
in the body known as endorphines , serotonin and other neuro
transmitters.
Every acupuncture point has its own specific purpose. In Veterinary
medicine, it is used to treat all disease patterns. It can be used for
arthritis as well as kidney disease. It can help with digestive disorders,
skin issues, allergies, lick granulomas, and so much more.
Acupuncture treatments can last as long as 45 minutes or as short
as 10 minutes. This depends on the age of the patient and the
ailment being treated. Most pets tolerated the treatments and many
of them come to enjoy them.
Equine acupuncture is also done by Nothside Veterinary Clinic. More...

Nutrition

We believe nutrition is an essential aspect of good health. In fact,
what and how much your pet eats , along with regular exercise,
veterinary care and a loving home environment are the most
important things you can do to insure a healthy happy pet. We believe
animals should be fed as closely as possible to what nature intended
and recommend human grade meat. We are happy to discuss cooking
for your pets and the pros and cons of raw food diets and learn more
about pet food with The Pet Food Primer.

Dental

85 percent of all pets have dental disease before they're
4th birthday! Oral disease can lead to serious consequences for your
pet, including pain, bad breath and tooth loss. Left untreated, oral
disease can become a chronic infection that spreads to major organs
that can seriously compromise your pets health.
We may recommend that the teeth be cleaned and polished.
Scaling removes the plaque and tartar buildup. Polishing smoothes
the surface of teeth to discourage plaque buildup. Modern veterinary
dentistry allows us to safely anesthetize most pets to clean the teeth.
Depending on your ability to brush the teeth, your pet may need its
teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months to one year.

Pharmacy

Northside Veterinary Clinic prescribes and recommends both
conventional and natural medicines and supplements. For the
most part, these can be compounded into liquids, chews, topical
medications that are convenient to administer to your pets.
We also have a large supply of chinese herbal medications for
many different disease patterns.

Herbal Medications

Our clients have the option of treating their pets solely with herbal
medication or they may choose herbal treatment with conventional
drugs. Our vets have extensive training in both Chinese and Western
herbal therapies. This gives you the flexibility to treat your pet
however you wish.

Radiology

We consider radiology to be an important diagnostic tool. We use
digital radiography so X-rays can be done as safely and quickly as
possible while ensuring topnotch detail. Results can be burned on to
a CD and sent to board certified radiologists.

Ultrasound

We utilize a mobile ultrasound unit where a trained technician or
veterinarian comes to our clinic to perform the ultrasound on your pet.
This in turn is read by a specialist and a full report is available within
48 hours.

Cold Laser Therapy

Laser therapy helps to speed up the healing process of many hard
to heal wounds. Examples are hip and knee
pain, arthritis and superficial ear lacerations.

Laboratory Services

Northside Veterinary Clinic offers a variety of laboratory tests, many
of which are done on-site. Often, we can provide results while you
wait for such laboratory tests as, comprehensive blood chemistries,
thyroid levels, feline leukemia, FIV,heartworm, lyme, ehrlichia,
anaplasmosis, packed cell volume & cytology. We have complete
diagnostic availability to perform urinalysis, intestinal parasite tests,
and countless other laboratory tests.

General Surgery

We provide surgery for dogs and cats.
Prior to surgery, pets are required to have an examination where
the veterinarian and technician will discuss the upcoming procedure
and answer any questions or concerns.
General surgical services include spays and neuters along with soft
tissue surgeries such as growth and foreign body removals.
We have a dedicated surgical suite where these procedures
are performed.
We use the most current anesthetic protocols to ensure the safety
and the well being of every patient.
Our monitoring equipment includes a pulse oximeter, Doppler blood
pressure, and an EKG.
Surgical patients are placed on intravenous fluids administered
through an infusion pump and kept warm during surgery on a
warm water thermal blanket. Sedatives and pain medications are administered during and after surgery to minimize stress and pain.
After surgery we closely monitor all animals to ensure their comfort
and safe recovery. Should we deem that more extensive surgery be
required, we will refer you to a Board certified surgeon at one of the
local specialty hospitals.

Hospitalization

We firmly believe that pets recover best at home. We prefer to keep
hospitalization to a minimum. Occasionally, it is necessary to
hospitalize an animal for treatment that cannot be effectively done
at home. Many times we are able to send your pet home for the night
so they can feel more comfortable and return to us in the morning for
more treatments.

USDA Accredited

In order for your pet to travel internationally, it is now required
( in most countries) to have a microchip and Rabies vaccine.
In addition, an international health certificate is needed
( Dr Leiman and Dr Eisner are certified by the USDA to do
these certificates ).
This certification is issued by the USDA (United States Department
of Agriculture) APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) VS
(Veterinary Services) Area Office in the State in which your accredited
veterinarian resides.

Microchips

We endorse the use of microchips and find them to be a safe, effective,
and inexpensive method to help ensure that pets and families be
reunited. Ten million unidentified pets get lost every year and 90% do
not return home. In contrast with these statistics, over 94% of
microchipped pets are reunited with their families! All shelters and
veterinary hospitals have microchip scanners, which means that lost
pets with microchips can be quickly and easily identified if brought to
a facility. We use Home Again microchips. They are about the size of
a grain of rice and are inserted under the skin with a syringe.
Microchips are often implanted at the time of spay or neuter but
can also be easily implanted when the pet is awake.
