Compassionate Pet Pain Management
At Northside Veterinary Clinic, it is our goal to make sure that our patients receive the care they deserve while remaining as comfortable as possible. We take pain management very seriously.
Acute Pain Management
Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to tell what kind of pain or how bad the pain level actually is when it comes to our pets. Acute pain is characterized by the sudden emergence of an uncomfortable sensation anywhere in the body. It can even be an indication that there is a potential medical pet emergency happening, so it is extremely important to know what symptoms or changes in behavior to look for at home. Signs that your animal is experiencing any type of acute pain can include:
- Lethargy
- Sudden lack of mobility
- Shaking or trembling
- Excessive licking or biting of affected area
- Increase in grooming
- Restlessness or pacing
- Increase in vocalization when moving or affected area is touched
- Aggressive behavior
Chronic Pain Management
Chronic pain, unlike acute pain, tends to linger once it appears. Instead of a sharp, sudden attack, chronic pain presents as a dull and persistent discomfort. If you notice that your pet has been "off," or that their behavior has changed over time and become the new normal, it might be a sign that they are experiencing and living with chronic pain, maybe even daily. This can seriously negatively effect their quality of life if left unaddressed. Thankfully there are many forms of treatment options used at our Williamsburg veterinary clinic to help different kinds of chronic pain, so even if the root cause cannot be cured, symptoms can definitely be treated and alleviated. Signs that your pet could be experiencing chronic pain include:
- They are less active or move at a slower pace
- Limping that does not resolve
- Noticeable body or joint stiffness
- Less willing to run, jump, climb, or other physically demanding activities
