Parasite Prevention
Parasite prevention for cats and dogs is key to protecting their long-term health and preventing harmful infections. Medication can help prevent some types of parasites, such as heartworm, fleas, and ticks, but your pet can still be at risk, especially if you live near a field, marsh, or wooded area, where parasitic critters thrive.
As a part of your pet preventative care routine, we recommend physically examining your pets for ticks, especially after a walk or during peak bug season, which runs from spring through fall. You should also keep them from eating things outdoors and drinking out of non-potable water sources, as parasite eggs can live in contaminated soil, food, feces, and water. Cats may get worms from eating infected rodents or catch fleas from ingesting them while grooming themselves. Be sure to watch them outdoors and keep their coat clean to prevent parasites.
It’s important to reach out to a veterinarian shortly after your pet starts displaying symptoms of potentially harboring any parasites. Although they are common, an uncontrolled infestation can quickly escalate and become serious or even life-threatening to both animals and humans. If you suspect that your pet has been introduced to a parasite, our veterinarians in Brooklyn, New York, will conduct diagnostic testing, such as a fecal exam, and deworming procedures to eradicate the parasite and protect your pet from future exposure.
